Something I´ve been asked a thousand times is why I chose Gijón to set up Complete English Club. The answer is quite simple; Gijón is a vibrant, lively coastal city in Asturias, offering a unique blend of culture, nature, and lifestyle that makes it an attractive place to be.
Here are several compelling reasons why Gijón is great:
Rich cultural heritage
Gijón is steeped in history, with its roots tracing back to Roman times. The city boasts numerous historical sites, including the Roman baths and the impressive Revillagigedo Palace. The local culture is vibrant, with various festivals celebrated throughout the year, such as the famous “Semana Grande,” which features music, parades, and traditional Asturian cuisine. The city’s artistic scene is also noteworthy, with numerous galleries and theaters showcasing both local and international talent.
Every year , in November, the FICX, which is the Festival Internacional de Cine de Gijón/Xixón, is held. This International film festival for independent films has become a mainstay in Gijon´s cultural scene and a must if you are visiting Gijón in November.
Natural beauty and outdoor activities
One of Gijón’s most significant advantages is its stunning natural surroundings. Nestled between the mountains and the sea, the city offers breathtaking views and a plethora of outdoor activities. The nearby Picos de Europa National Park provides opportunities for hiking, climbing, and exploring the diverse wildlife. The coastal area is perfect for water sports, including surfing and sailing, with beautiful beaches like San Lorenzo, Gijón´s main urban beach, attracting both locals and tourists alike.
Gastronomic delights
Asturias is renowned for its culinary offerings, and Gijón is no exception. The city is famous for its cider, a staple of Asturian culture. You can enjoy tasting sessions at local cider houses, known as “sidrerías,” where you can experience the traditional way of pouring cider. Additionally, Gijón’s culinary scene features a mix of traditional Asturian dishes and modern cuisine, with fresh seafood and locally sourced ingredients being highlights. Among traditional seafood dishes are sea urchins and spider crab.
Quality of life
Gijón offers a high quality of life, characterised by a relaxed pace and a friendly community. The cost of living is relatively affordable compared to larger Spanish cities like Madrid and Barcelona. Housing options range from modern apartments to charming historic homes, catering to various preferences and budgets. The city is also well-connected, with good public transport links and proximity to the Asturias Airport, making travel convenient.
Building of interest
Originally built as a learning center for orphans whose parents had died as a result of working in the mining industry, it currently hosts several cultural institutions.
Built between 1946 and 1955, with its 270,000 m2, it is the largest building in Spain, even larger than the Monastery of El Escorial.
Abandoned in the 1980s, the whole building was restored between 2001 and 2007. On 19 May 2016, the Universidad Laboral was listed as a Cultural heritage site.
Nowadays, several institutions are located in the main building, such as LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial, faculties of the University of Oviedo, the Drama High School of Asturias and the Professional Music School of Gijón.
